Mokume gane is an ancienr Japanese technique. The name means “ wood eye metal”. Mokume gane jewelry is formed by carefully layering sheets of different colored precious metals ( in this case, 34 layers), fusing them into a single "billet" using heat and pressure, and then manipulating the billet to create wood-grain-like patterns. The process involves stacking the metals, compressing them under pressure, heating the stack until the layers fuse, and then repeatedly carving, forging, and shaping the resulting block, to create a subtle palette of precious metal colors. Due to the labor-intensive nature of fine mokume jewelry, it will remain an uncommon jewelry technique, avoiding association with mass-produced commercial jewelry.
